Once an APC stronghold, Kano shifted to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) during the last general election, losing the governorship and all senatorial seats except Kano North, retained by Senator Barau.

Since then, the APC has remained in opposition, with Senator Barau regarded as the backbone of the party in the state.

Former APC National Chairman Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje described him as the “General of Nigerian Politics.”

As 2027 approaches, stakeholders—including former and serving members of the Kano State House of Assembly, former commissioners, women leaders, and ex-local government chairmen have publicly thrown their support behind Senator Barau as the sole APC gubernatorial candidate.

Former House Speaker Rt. Hon. Abdulaziz G. Gafasa, representing over 200 members, highlighted Barau’s impact on all three senatorial districts of Kano and his steadfast loyalty to the party.

Similarly, Dr Ali Musa Burum-Burum noted that Senator Barau has been pivotal in keeping the APC active in Kano State.

Women leaders from 31 local government areas and former chairmen who served under Ganduje also endorsed Barau, citing his parliamentary contributions and commitment to grassroots development.

Former speakers-councillors of LGAs, led by Hon. Shuaibu Haruna Gamarya, reaffirmed their support, declaring Barau as the APC gubernatorial candidate for 2027.

Various other groups, including the Tinubu/Barau Support Group Coalition, former federal lawmakers, and hundreds of ex-councillors, supervisors, and advisers from 1999 to date, have pledged loyalty to the duo.

Local government stakeholders, led by Alhaji Inuwa Dan Shayi Rimin Gado, echoed their support, promising full mobilisation of grassroots networks.

During interactions with stakeholders, Senator Barau emphasised the need to restore Kano State to its former glory, highlighting past development and commerce under effective leadership.

He described the mission as a “rescue of Kano”, promising bold steps to address current governance challenges.

Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Rt Hon Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, expressed confidence in Barau’s eventual victory, reinforcing the party’s commitment to reclaiming Kano.
