SDP candidate Adebayo makes a Tinubu opposition control claim, alleging interference in rival parties ahead of the 2027 presidential election
The Social Democratic Party, SDP, presidential candidate Prince Adewole Adebayo, on Friday, in a statement issued through his spokesperson Alabi Alayande, accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of attempting to dominate Nigeria’s political space ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Adebayo alleged that President Tinubu is seeking to extend his influence beyond the All Progressives Congress, APC, claiming that the President wants to be regarded as the presidential candidate of multiple political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party and SDP.
The allegation, which forms the basis of a Tinubu opposition control claim, was described by Adebayo as a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic process, warning that such interference in opposition party affairs undermines political competition.
He argued that despite already securing the APC presidential ticket, the President’s alleged reach into rival party structures represents what he termed a dangerous consolidation of political power.
Adebayo further urged Nigerians to resist what he described as anti democratic tendencies through the ballot in the 2027 elections, insisting that political accountability must be preserved.
He also criticised what he called the excessive pursuit of power among Nigerian politicians, contrasting it with the economic hardship faced by citizens across the country.
“The greed for money has been detected. But the greed for the soul of the country, that is one we cannot allow,” he said, adding that the SDP would actively participate in the 2027 presidential election with him as its flag bearer.

Adebayo was formally confirmed as the SDP presidential candidate during the party’s national convention and primaries held on May 9 in Bauchi. The party has since intensified preparations ahead of the forthcoming electoral cycle.
