The initiative, announced on Monday, represents a coordinated strategy among governors to address banditry, armed robbery, and other security threats in the region.

The proposed plan includes closer collaboration among state security agencies, enhanced intelligence sharing, and the deployment of specialised rapid response units in crime-prone areas.

Governors emphasised that the effort will combine preventive, kinetic, and community-focused measures to restore public confidence.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State said the initiative reflects a “shared commitment to proactive governance and the protection of lives and property.” He added that the plan is designed to strengthen existing law enforcement efforts while leveraging modern surveillance and technology.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State highlighted that cross-border collaboration among the South-West states would allow security agencies to monitor criminal movements more effectively, especially along highways and urban corridors vulnerable to attacks.

The governors also indicated that the strategy would involve partnerships with local communities, traditional rulers, and private stakeholders to provide actionable intelligence and support preventive interventions. “Security is a shared responsibility,” Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State said. “Our people must be part of the solution.”

Officials noted that funding and logistical support from state governments, combined with federal collaboration where necessary, would underpin the plan. The coordinated approach is expected to serve as a model for other regions facing similar security challenges.
