Sokoto PDP Crisis Deepens Over Wike-Backed Convention Dispute

Sokoto PDP crisis deepens as factions clash over Wike-backed convention participation, exposing divisions within the party ahead of key decisions

A deepening internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has intensified following disagreements over participation in a national elective convention in Abuja linked to a faction reportedly backed by Nyesom Wike.

The Sokoto PDP crisis escalated after a pro-Bature group within the party rejected claims that the state chapter had distanced itself from the convention, describing such assertions as misleading and not representative of the wider membership.

The group, which supports the re-election of former National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, faulted a statement attributed to the State Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sanyinnawal, which suggested that the Sokoto chapter had dissociated itself from the ongoing convention scheduled at the National Stadium in Abuja.

According to the group’s chairman, Abubakar Danmafara, Sokoto State remains an integral part of the PDP and cannot be excluded from a process of such national significance.

He insisted that attempts to portray otherwise were inaccurate and capable of creating further division within the party.

Danmafara further disclosed that hundreds of party members from Sokoto have already arrived in Abuja to participate in the convention, describing their presence as a demonstration of commitment to party unity and internal democracy.

He maintained that the group is fully mobilised in support of Umar Bature’s re-election bid, stressing that their involvement in the convention reflects a broader effort to strengthen credible leadership selection within the party.

The pro-Bature faction urged party members to disregard any directive discouraging participation in the exercise, describing attendance as both legitimate and necessary for sustaining democratic practices within the PDP.

The ongoing Sokoto PDP crisis highlights widening divisions within the state chapter, with competing factions expressing divergent views on leadership, alignment and participation in national party activities.

Danmafara called on party leaders at all levels to prioritise dialogue, inclusiveness and reconciliation in order to preserve unity and stability within the party.

He emphasised that the PDP’s strength depends on cooperation among its members across all regions.

“The success of the PDP depends on the collective efforts of its members across all states,” he stated, urging stakeholders to remain peaceful and committed to the party’s ideals as the convention progresses.
