Russia mocks Ukraine peace talks after Trump and EU leaders meet, calling it ineffective and anti-Russian, while dismissing Europe’s role in negotiations
Russia mocks Ukraine peace talks held in Washington, dismissing the meeting between former U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and top European leaders as ineffective and politically motivated.

The talks, which aimed to push forward a peace framework in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, were ridiculed by top Russian politicians, including former president Dmitry Medvedev, who referred to the gathering as an “anti-Russian warmongering Coalition of the Willing.”
In a post on X, Medvedev scornfully described the leaders’ presence at the White House as symbolic of political desperation.
“They thanked and sucked up to Trump, but couldn’t outplay him,” he said. He also mocked Zelensky, questioning how the “clown from Kiev” would return to his military uniform once back in Ukraine.
Russian lawmakers were unified in condemning the involvement of European capitals in the peace process.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte attended the meeting alongside Trump and Zelensky.
Konstantin Kosachev, a senior foreign policy official in the Russian Federation Council, claimed that Europe and Ukraine were forced to soften their tone under Trump’s influence.
“Times have changed. Neither Kiev nor Brussels can bark at Russia hidden behind the American back,” he wrote on Telegram.
Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the Duma’s foreign affairs committee, echoed the sentiment, urging Europe to stay out of future negotiations.
“Europe should follow Vladimir Putin’s call and not interfere in the negotiation process,” he stated.
In a turn of events, Trump suggested that Zelensky meet directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin, possibly followed by a three-way meeting including himself.
While European leaders emphasized the need for Ukraine to receive strong security guarantees, Trump’s proposal hinted at a more aggressive move toward a settlement.
Despite public opposition from Moscow to Western participation in talks, the rhetoric from Russian leaders suggests they are closely watching any diplomatic shifts — especially those led by Trump, who has signaled a different strategy from the Biden administration.
