Peter Obi and John Odigie-Oyegun reportedly survive an alleged assassination attempt in Benin City, Edo State targeting ADC leadership
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and senior chieftains of the African Democratic Congress were reportedly attacked in an alleged assassination attempt on Tuesday in Benin City.

According to reports, the incident occurred shortly after a political event in the state capital and following the group’s departure from the ADC secretariat.
A video circulating online shows the aftermath, including estate gates and several vehicles riddled with bullet holes.
Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, confirmed that attackers followed the delegation from the ADC Secretariat to Odigie-Oyegun’s residence, opening fire on the estate gate and damaging multiple official vehicles.
Tanko described the incident as a suspected failed assassination attempt targeting the party leadership.
“The leadership of the ADC is under siege and attack in Benin, Edo State. Armed individuals followed us from the ADC Secretariat to the residence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and shot at the gate, destroying several vehicles,” he said.
In footage shared online, Obi confirmed that the attack occurred shortly after leaving the ADC headquarters.
Details regarding injuries or arrests have not yet been disclosed.

The incident raises security concerns ahead of the 2027 elections, highlighting the volatile political climate in Edo State and Nigeria more broadly.
