PDP Opens Dialogue to Resolve Factional Rift Ahead of 2027

PDP reconciliation 2027: Party leaders engage in talks to bridge divisions between Makinde and Wike camps ahead of 2027 elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken steps to avert a deep internal crisis, as factions loyal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike open dialogue to steady the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

For months, tensions had escalated into public exchanges, court cases, and quiet power plays, raising concerns about party unity and preparedness for the next election cycle.

Speaking in Abuja, factional PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki said the party’s National Working Committee, aligned with the Makinde camp, initiated steps to ease tensions following intervention by the Board of Trustees, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara.

“In obedience to the advisory of the Court of Appeal, Ibadan, the Board of Trustees constituted a high-powered committee to interface with our estranged party members,” Turaki said, adding that leaders on both sides had “broken the ice” and were exploring pathways toward lasting resolution.

The PDP National Chairman warned supporters nationwide to avoid actions or words that could destabilise the fragile progress, stressing that compromise is necessary.

“We are willing to bend as far as our necks and backs allow… PDP will not die,” he said.

Turaki also disclosed that individuals working against reconciliation had been identified and removed, signalling a shift toward collective alignment.

The NWC passed a vote of confidence on Governors Makinde and Bala Mohammed, praising their role during the crisis.

Meanwhile, Minister Wike dismissed claims of factionalism, asserting that the PDP remains a single entity despite individual grievances. He described recent outreach efforts as personal reconciliations rather than formal factional negotiations.

“There is only one PDP now,” he said, while affirming that the party’s upcoming convention will proceed as scheduled.

A top Makinde-aligned NWC member confirmed that all critical stakeholders had bought into the reconciliation efforts.

“For sure. All of them are on board, they gave us a mandate to reconcile. All stakeholders are part of it,” he said.

With both camps signalling willingness to compromise, attention now turns to whether the dialogue will produce a lasting truce or if underlying divisions will resurface on the road to 2027.
