Odinkalu Criticises Fubara Over Exit From APC Primary

Chidi Odinkalu reacts to Governor Sim Fubara’s withdrawal from the APC primary, questioning his political trajectory and eligibility concerns

Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission Chidi Odinkalu has commented on Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara following his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress governorship primary, suggesting that the development reflects deeper questions about his political journey.

Odinkalu made the remarks in a post shared on X on Thursday, where he reacted to the governor’s reported exit from the 2027 APC primary race.

He stated that Fubara had now “brought clarity” to his political direction, adding that politics may not have been the most suitable path for him.

According to Odinkalu, Fubara was still serving as a civil servant in 2022 and remained in office beyond the period required by the Electoral Act for aspirants intending to contest elections.

He argued that such circumstances raised questions about compliance with electoral guidelines, noting that aspirants are expected to resign from public service within stipulated timelines before contesting for political office.

Odinkalu added that the governor’s decision effectively frees him to return to public service, where he suggested his career prospects may be more appropriate.

In his post, he wrote that Fubara had “finally brought clarity” to his situation and that politics “was not for him.”

The remarks have generated reactions online, with supporters and critics offering differing interpretations of both the legal and political implications of Odinkalu’s comments.
