Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, speaking in Lagos, Nigeria, on Tuesday, called for greater unity among opposition leaders following the defection of former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the development as a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s democratic renewal.

The Obi unity Kwankwaso ADC defection call came as Obi publicly confirmed a recent visit to Kano, where he met Kwankwaso at his invitation and discussed the need for cooperation among opposition figures ahead of future political contests.
Obi said the visit coincided with Kwankwaso’s decision to join the ADC, noting that the move represents what he described as a broader effort to strengthen democratic participation and national rebuilding.
In a statement shared on X, the former Anambra State governor stressed that opposition parties must put aside political, ethnic and regional differences in order to address Nigeria’s growing governance challenges.
He further urged leaders to prioritise competence, character, capacity and compassion in shaping political decisions, arguing that the country’s future should take precedence over electoral ambition.
Obi also emphasised that political engagement should extend beyond winning elections, focusing instead on rebuilding institutions and restoring public trust in governance.
