A political analyst warns that the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance may face trust and structural challenges in Northern Nigeria ahead of 2027
A political analyst and Chief Executive Officer of NMS Media Consultancy, Hassan Abdulsalam, has raised concerns over the proposed political alliance between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, warning that it may face serious acceptance and structural challenges in Northern Nigeria.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Abdulsalam said the alliance may appear attractive to young voters but could struggle with trust issues and weak political organisation across key regions.
He noted that while Rabiu Kwankwaso maintains strong grassroots influence in Kano and parts of the North-West, Peter Obi enjoys significant support among young and urban voters, especially in southern Nigeria.
According to him, growing public dissatisfaction with the political system is driving interest in alternative political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the analyst cautioned that trust remains a major issue in the North, stating that many voters may not fully connect with Obi due to perceived gaps in understanding regional challenges.
He also described the alliance as a “marriage of convenience,” citing differences in political background and approach between both figures.
Abdulsalam further raised concerns about religious and regional perceptions, warning that they could influence voter acceptance and national cohesion if not properly managed.
Beyond personality politics, he stressed that party structure would be critical to any electoral success, noting that a strong national presence at all levels remains essential.
He questioned whether the proposed political platform, the NDC, currently has the organisational depth required to compete effectively in a general election.
Despite his concerns, Abdulsalam acknowledged that both politicians command strong personal followings that could translate into votes if properly mobilised.

He concluded that the evolving political landscape leaves Nigerians with difficult choices ahead of 2027, where alliances and party strength may play decisive roles.
