The former president, in his memoir “Nigeria: Past and Future”, accused President Bola Tinubu of incompetence and likened his administration to that of the late Muhammadu Buhari, which he labeled Nigeria’s “worst civil regime.”

Obasanjo wrote, “Only Bola Tinubu’s administration seems to be competing with Buhari’s for now,” a claim that immediately drew strong backlash from the ruling party.

Reacting in a press statement on Tuesday, APC Lagos spokesperson Seye Oladejo described the remark as “laughable” and “disgracefully hypocritical,” adding that Obasanjo’s era was marked by political arrogance, failed reforms, and squandered opportunities.

“President Bola Tinubu has taken decisions that no previous leader had the spine to take,” Oladejo stated.

“Removing fuel subsidies, overhauling the forex regime, and tackling inefficiencies are not marks of incompetence—they show courage.

The party accused Obasanjo of harboring bitterness because he can no longer control the political narrative, branding his criticism as an “attention-seeking outburst.

APC Lagos also revisited Obasanjo’s legacy, citing mismanagement in the power sector, rising debt, a failed third-term bid, and widespread corruption as blots on his record.

“If Nigeria is still recovering from structural rot, Obasanjo bears a huge chunk of the blame,” the statement read.

“The mess didn’t begin with Buhari, nor is it worsened by Tinubu it began under those who now pretend to be saints.

The party concluded by stating that President Tinubu is focused on reforms, not political rivalry. “Nigeria is on a path of reform, recovery, and renewal,” the APC affirmed.
