Abati Warns NDC Over “Dangerous” Political Influx

NDC political influx warning issued by Reuben Abati as he cautions against unchecked growth following entry of Obi and Kwankwaso

Veteran journalist and former presidential aide Reuben Abati has issued a strong caution over the rapid expansion of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, warning that the party risks becoming what he described as a “camp for internally displaced politicians” following its recent surge in membership.

Reuben Abati said the NDC political influx warning was necessary to ensure the party does not lose ideological direction amid its growing appeal ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abati noted that the party’s membership had reportedly risen from about 9.4 million to over 10 million within a short period, a development he attributed to the recent entry of prominent political figures including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

While acknowledging that the influx has boosted the party’s visibility and political momentum, Abati warned that such rapid expansion could weaken internal structure if not properly managed.

He stressed that the party must establish a clear ideological identity and a concrete engagement framework with citizens.

“The NDC must not become an IDP camp for internally displaced politicians,” Abati said, using a striking metaphor to describe what he views as unstructured political migration into the party.

He further argued that while the party appears to be gaining traction as a potential major opposition force, it risks losing coherence if it relies solely on high-profile entrants without a defined manifesto or programme of action.

Abati also suggested that the emergence of the NDC could reshape Nigeria’s opposition landscape, noting that attempts to weaken other parties have often led to political realignments rather than disappearance of dissenting voices.

He added that the situation presents a significant test for both the ruling All Progressives Congress and the wider democratic system, as competition ahead of the 2027 elections is expected to intensify.

According to him, the involvement of Obi and Kwankwaso has added “momentum and weight” to the party, but sustaining that influence will depend on internal discipline and clarity of purpose.

The remarks have since sparked discussion within political circles, with analysts viewing the development as part of a broader reshaping of Nigeria’s opposition politics.
