NDC Enugu Rejects Zoning in Bold Governorship Move

NDC Enugu governorship zoning decision sees party reject zoning for governorship ticket, opening contest to all aspirants ahead of 2027 elections

The Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Nigeria Democratic Congress, led by Dr Johnpaul Anih, has announced that it will not zone its governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The decision was disclosed on Friday after a State Working Committee meeting held in Enugu, where party leaders reaffirmed that the governorship ticket remains open to all qualified aspirants across the state.

Speaking to journalists, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Ugwueze, stated that the decision was taken to strengthen the party’s chances of defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Congress, in the state.

He explained that the party would prioritise competence and electoral strength over regional considerations, insisting that the governorship ticket would be determined by capability rather than zoning arrangements.

According to him, the party’s strategic focus is to secure victory in 2027 and take control of the state government, which he described as a key political objective.

Ugwueze added that while the governorship ticket remains open, the party has implemented zoning arrangements for senatorial and other legislative positions to ensure balance and inclusiveness across constituencies.

He noted that the decisions were guided by fairness and ongoing consultations with stakeholders across the three senatorial districts in Enugu State.

The party also cautioned members against misinformation and internal sabotage, warning that external influences could undermine its unity and electoral prospects.

In a separate briefing, Dr Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor confirmed additional zoning decisions for certain federal constituencies, while noting that consultations were still ongoing for others.

The leadership urged aspirants to respect the zoning arrangements where applicable and support consensus candidates for the overall success of the party.
