Shagari made the remarks on Thursday during an appearance on Arise Television, where he reacted to Fubara’s reported decision to opt out of the 2027 political process.
He stated that Governor Fubara acted of his own volition and should not be seen as having been coerced into his decision.
“Nobody forced him. Governor Fubara is a mature and well-educated leader who, like every Nigerian, has the right to participate in the democratic process or choose not to,” he said.
Shagari added that Fubara had every right to make personal political choices, noting that such decisions should be respected without unnecessary speculation.
According to him, the Rivers State governor indicated that his decision followed consultations and did not suggest external pressure or influence.
He further stressed that political participation remains a personal choice within a democratic system, and should be treated as such by the public and political stakeholders.
