Labour Party Internal Crisis Exposes Shocking Political Weakness

Labour Party internal crisis deepens as Senator Ireti Kingibe declares the party broken, revealing plans to support ADC ahead of upcoming elections

Senator Ireti Kingibe has publicly stated that the Labour Party is currently not in a position to win any elections due to internal crisis and deep divisions.

Speaking during a broadcast interview on Channels TV’s ‘Political Paradigm’ on Tuesday, the senator painted a bleak picture of the party’s structure and viability.

While affirming that she remains a Labour Party member, Kingibe disclosed she is now supporting the African Democratic Congress as part of a coalition movement aimed at securing electoral success.

“Yes, I am still a member of the Labour Party, but I support the ADC,” she stated during the interview.

According to her, the Labour Party has become dysfunctional. She described it as “fractured and broken”, explaining that the party’s disarray has made it ineffective as an electoral platform, especially with local government elections approaching.

“Labour Party is in some sort of a quagmire. We are trying to put it together, but I do not see the Labour Party in the present way it is as a vehicle that can win any election. It’s been very fractured and broken,” she said.

This revelation is significant, particularly as the Labour Party has been seen by some voters as an emerging third force in Nigerian politics. Kingibe’s comments suggest that internal issues may be undermining its momentum.

She revealed that there are currently two factions within the party, which further complicates its structure and electoral potential.

The split, she said, has made it difficult for the party to function as a united front or present viable candidates for critical elections.

“We have local government elections coming… So, we needed a platform. The Labour Party would have been that platform, but it was broken,” she added.

According to Kingibe, the ADC presented itself as a more stable and credible option for the coalition movement.

She expressed confidence in its candidates and the potential for the ADC to deliver results, especially in the Federal Capital Territory.

“I know the FCT can win, not on APC. So, ADC has credible candidates, and it is that platform we are going to use to show them,” she said with conviction.

Her position has raised concerns among Labour Party supporters who view her statements as confirmation of deeper unresolved issues.

Others, however, see her shift as a pragmatic move in response to the current realities of party politics in Nigeria.

Observers believe this public admission could affect the party’s credibility in the coming elections.

As more political figures speak out, attention is likely to shift toward whether the Labour Party can resolve its internal crisis in time.

One political analyst commented, “When a sitting senator openly questions her own party’s viability, that’s a clear warning signal.

It suggests serious internal breakdowns that may not be easy to fix.”

Labour Party officials have not released an official response to Kingibe’s statements as of Tuesday evening.

However, members of both factions are likely to face renewed scrutiny following the senator’s remarks.

The Labour Party internal crisis now threatens to derail its role as a credible political alternative.

With rising disillusionment among supporters and critical voices from within, the path forward appears uncertain unless unity is urgently restored.

For now, the spotlight remains on Kingibe’s shift in allegiance and the broader implications it may have for both Labour Party and Nigerian opposition politics.
