Labour Party Court Judgment: Usman Hails Ruling as Victory for Rule of Law

Labour Party Court Judgment dismissed Abure’s suit, with Senator Nenadi Usman praising the decision as a triumph for rule of law and party unity

Labour Party Court Judgment has brought renewed clarity to the party’s leadership crisis, as the Federal High Court, Abuja, dismissed a case filed by Mr. Julius Abure against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The ruling, delivered in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1523/2025, struck out Abure’s claims for lack of jurisdiction, citing the binding authority of the Supreme Court’s April 4, 2025, judgment in Appeal No. SC/CV/56/2025.

That decision had already nullified previous recognitions of Abure’s leadership.

In a statement on Friday, the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, welcomed the court’s verdict, describing it as “another unambiguous affirmation of the rule of law.”

She said the judgment was consistent with the constitutional duty imposed by Section 287 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Senator Usman also commended INEC for what she called its “clarity, courage, and institutional integrity.” In its counter-affidavit, the Commission confirmed that Abure’s tenure, along with the tenure of the National Executive Committee, expired in June 2024.

INEC further stated it neither monitored nor recognised the March 27, 2024, Nnewi convention, which it described as a violation of the Labour Party constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and its own regulations.

Calling on members to put “needless distractions” behind them, Senator Usman urged unity and discipline as the party seeks to rebuild.

The decision, hailed as a powerfully decisive moment, reaffirms Senator Usman’s pledge to uphold the party’s constitution, safeguard transparent internal democracy, and prepare for upcoming political contests with renewed strength.
