Kwankwaso Vigorously Defends Mentorship claims in Kano politics

Kwankwaso political mentorship claim reiterated as senator insists Yusuf and Ganduje remain his protégés amid renewed Kano political debate

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has reiterated his long-standing influence in Kano politics, insisting that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje remain his political protégés despite growing debate over the nature of their relationships.

Kwankwaso’s political godfather claim was made on Wednesday during an address to members of the Kwankwasiyya movement at his Miller Road residence in Kano, where the senator responded to recent remarks questioning the appropriateness of describing senior political figures as “political sons”.

Speaking before a large crowd, Kwankwaso addressed the controversy with a light-hearted tone, drawing laughter when he remarked that some individuals were uncomfortable with being referred to as his “boy”.

The moment underscored the continued influence of the Kwankwasiyya movement within Kano’s political landscape.

He later shifted to a more direct tone in Hausa, firmly maintaining that both Yusuf and Ganduje rose politically under his guidance. His comments were met with loud applause from supporters, reflecting strong loyalty within the gathering.

“If it is not out of disrespect, will Abba Kabir Yusuf say he is not my political son? If it is not out of disrespect, will Abdullahi Umar Ganduje say he is not my political son?” Kwankwaso said, reinforcing his stance on political lineage.

Former Governor Ganduje has previously acknowledged working with Kwankwaso but rejected the notion of a godfather relationship, stating in a BBC interview that their collaboration was based on political necessity rather than mentorship.
