Rabiu Kwankwaso says he is open to reconciling with Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf despite political differences and past defections
Former Kano State Governor and national leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said he remains open to reconciling with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, stressing that political differences have not affected his personal regard for his former protégé.

Kwankwaso made the remarks during an interview with BBC Hausa, where he addressed growing speculation over tensions within the Kwankwasiyya political structure.
He said the door to reconciliation remains open, noting that Yusuf chose to leave the movement and could still return if he wishes.
“I still love Abba and I didn’t reject him; he is the one that left. Not just Abba — if anyone who left comes back, I won’t be unforgiving,” Kwankwaso said.
He referenced past political disagreements, including his relationship with former Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje, to illustrate that reconciliation is possible in politics.
The rift between Kwankwaso and Yusuf deepened after Yusuf left the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), the platform on which he won the 2023 governorship election, for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kwankwaso maintained that Yusuf’s victory in 2023 was largely driven by the strength of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which played a central role in mobilising support across Kano State.
He explained that Yusuf was chosen as the party’s candidate to test the movement’s political strength at the time, rather than for seniority or personal status.
Kwankwaso also emphasised the importance of tolerance in leadership, saying leaders must accept differing opinions and maintain openness in dealing with political allies.
“As a leader, you need to have an open heart. You cannot force people to think the way you do,” he added.

The comments highlight ongoing political realignments in Kano State as key figures within the NNPP and APC continue to reposition ahead of future elections.
