Atiku Is Leader Other Candidates Follow, Says Okonkwo

Kenneth Okonkwo says Atiku Abubakar leads national discourse, praises his economic record and promises a return of fuel subsidy if elected in 2027

Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesman for African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has described the former vice-president as the leading voice among politicians discussing Nigeria’s future ahead of the 2027 general election.

Okonkwo made the claim on Friday, 9 October 2026, while highlighting Atiku’s record in government and his proposed approach to economic policy.

The veteran Nollywood actor-turned-lawyer recalled that Atiku served as vice-president from 1999 to 2007, during which he said the former presidential candidate headed Nigeria’s economic team.

In a post on X, Okonkwo argued that Atiku’s experience in government had positioned him ahead of other political candidates in important national conversations.

“Atiku is now the clear leader whom other candidates are following in every important national discourse,” he wrote.

Okonkwo also credited Atiku with helping to build what he described as Nigeria’s strongest economy during his time as vice-president.

He further claimed that the administration paid fuel subsidy and settled the country’s external debt, presenting the period as evidence of Atiku’s economic credentials.

However, the assessment reflects Okonkwo’s political position, and his claims about the economy and Atiku’s leadership were not independently established in the statement.

The ADC spokesman also expressed confidence that Atiku would restore fuel subsidy if elected president in 2027, describing the proposed policy as a measure intended to protect Nigerians’ welfare.

According to Okonkwo, Atiku’s approach would place greater emphasis on the needs of ordinary citizens amid the economic pressures facing the country.

“Atiku is humane and humble. His promise to bring back subsidy is a reflection of his policy of putting people and their welfare first,” he said.

He called on Nigerians to support Atiku’s presidential ambition, presenting the former vice-president as a leader capable of prioritising security and public welfare.

Okonkwo concluded by urging Nigerians to work towards Atiku’s election, although he referred to 16 January 2026 as the election date in his statement.

That date has already passed and appears inconsistent with the context of the 2027 general election.

The remarks come as political figures and parties continue to position themselves ahead of the next presidential contest, with economic policy, the cost of living and fuel pricing likely to remain central issues in the national debate.
