Kano Governor Abba Yusuf says northern candidates should wait till 2031 and let the South complete two presidential terms under Tinubu
Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has asked northern presidential hopefuls to wait until 2031 before seeking Nigeria’s highest office.

Yusuf made the call on Sunday at Government House, Kano, while unveiling 50 vehicles donated by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, to support All Progressives Congress campaign work in the state before the 2027 elections.
A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, said Yusuf backed continued rotation of the presidency between the North and the South.
Each region, he said, should hold the office for two consecutive terms so that an administration has time to carry out major policies.
“I urge support for President Bola Tinubu to complete his second term because this would allow the South to complete its two-term cycle before power returns to the North,” Yusuf said.
He added, “We should allow the South to complete its two-term cycle. After that, power will return to the North in 2031.”
The governor asked political stakeholders in the North to be patient and let that arrangement run its course.
In effect, he told northern aspirants to put off their presidential bids until after the 2027 to 2031 term.
Yusuf said rotation should build fairness, national cohesion, mutual trust and a sense of belonging.
“Rotational presidency is about fairness, equity and giving every part of the country a sense of belonging,” he said.
He also urged politicians and parties to run peaceful, issue-based campaigns before the 2027 general elections and to dwell on policies and development plans rather than personal attacks.
“Let us focus on issues, policies and programmes and avoid actions that can undermine peace and unity,” Yusuf said.

He restated his administration’s pledge to peaceful politics and asked stakeholders to put the unity, peace and development of Kano State and Nigeria above party lines.
