Iyabo Obasanjo Blames APC Exit on Broken Promises and Disappointment

Iyabo Obasanjo explains her exit from APC, citing broken promises and frustration after losing Ogun governorship ticket in a heated political fallout

Iyabo Obasanjo, former Senator and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, publicly confirmed her resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) during an appearance on the Morayo Show, in Nigeria, on Wednesday, July 2, 2026, citing what she described as unmet expectations and disappointment over internal party agreements.

Iyabo Obasanjo stated that her decision followed growing frustration after the APC consensus governorship candidate in Ogun State allegedly failed to fulfil commitments made to her and her political supporters during the build-up to the party’s internal selection process.

“I resigned from the APC because I was upset that the consensus candidate failed to keep the promises he made to me and my followers,” Iyabo Obasanjo said during the televised interview, offering a direct explanation for her departure from the ruling party.

The resignation marks another significant turn in Iyabo Obasanjo’s renewed political engagement, having returned to frontline politics in January 2026 after a 15-year hiatus.

At the time, she joined the APC and declared her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election, signalling a high-profile comeback into Nigeria’s political landscape.

However, tensions within the party escalated after she failed to secure the governorship ticket. By May 31, 2026, Iyabo Obasanjo formally exited the APC, citing what she described as disrespect, betrayal, and unfair treatment by party leadership during the nomination process.

Her latest remarks add further context to the political fallout, suggesting that internal negotiations and unmet expectations played a central role in her decision to leave.

Following her departure, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has reportedly received Iyabo Obasanjo, positioning her once again within the opposition’s political structure ahead of future electoral contests.

Political observers note that her movement between major parties reflects the increasingly fluid nature of Nigeria’s pre-election alignments, particularly among high-profile aspirants seeking strategic platforms for governorship ambitions.

The development is expected to further shape political calculations in Ogun State as parties intensify preparations for upcoming elections, with attention now shifting to Iyabo Obasanjo’s next political direction and alliances.
