INEC Neutrality Doubts May Trigger 2027 Election Crisis, Expert Warns

INEC Impartiality For 2027 election triggers concerns raised as expert warns doubts could fuel division, court cases, and voter distrust ahead of polls

A political analyst at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Professor Murtala Muhammad, has warned that rising concerns over the neutrality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could deepen political divisions and trigger widespread legal disputes before and after the 2027 general elections.

Concerns Over INEC Neutrality Ahead of 2027 Election were raised during an exclusive meeting where Professor Muhammad said recent controversies surrounding the commission’s handling of internal party leadership disputes, including within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), are already shaping public perception of Nigeria’s electoral integrity.

He noted that INEC’s decision not to recognise certain factional leaders within the ADC has intensified debates over whether the electoral body is maintaining impartiality or contributing to a perceived shift toward one-party dominance.

According to him, opposition parties have become increasingly vocal, with some calling for the resignation of the INEC Chairman over allegations of bias and perceived political sympathy, claims the commission has continued to face in public discourse.

Professor Muhammad warned that even disputed allegations can significantly influence voter confidence, stressing that perception often carries more weight than official clarification in shaping public trust.

He explained that Nigeria may be heading towards a polarised political climate in which supporters of different parties hold sharply contrasting views of the electoral system, a situation he described as potentially destabilising.

The analyst further cautioned that such division could affect voter turnout, increase pre- and post-election litigation, and undermine acceptance of election results if not properly addressed.

He urged INEC to prioritise transparency, fairness, and clearer communication to rebuild confidence ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that failure to do so could result in a more contested and legally challenged electoral process.
