The former contenders, Longers Anyanwu, Gloria Akobundu and Kennedy Ike Odoeme, made the clarification during a press briefing in Owerri, the Imo State capital, where they addressed reports surrounding the outcome of the primary election.
The trio explained that they stepped down shortly before the commencement of the exercise in support of the incumbent senator, Patrick Ndubueze, whom they said benefited from the agreed zoning arrangement among stakeholders in the district.
They maintained that their decision was not influenced by pressure but was taken in the interest of fairness, unity and political stability within Imo North.
According to them, the arrangement among party elders and leaders favoured Ndubueze, prompting them to direct their supporters to back his candidacy during the primary.
The former aspirants also insisted that the exercise was peaceful, orderly and conducted in line with the guidelines of the APC, adding that the process reflected the maturity of party members in the district.
They urged the public to disregard reports suggesting conflicting outcomes from the senatorial primary, stressing that the results were properly collated and announced by the designated returning officer.
The trio further commended party members for their conduct throughout the process, describing the exercise as hitch-free and free of violence or disruption.
