Kano ADC Faction Petitions Police Over Leadership Crisis

Kano ADC leadership crisis deepens as a faction petitions police over alleged illegal actions and dispute over the party’s caretaker committee

Kano ADC leadership crisis has deepened after a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) petitioned the Kano State Police Command over a dispute involving the party’s state executive structure.

The Kano State Transition Committee, led by Hon. Musa Shu’aibu Ungogo, submitted the petition on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, accusing Hajiya Najaatu Muhammed of taking actions that could create tension within the party and disrupt internal stability.

The faction alleged that Najaatu, who identified herself as the ADC Deputy National Chairman (North-West), unlawfully announced the dissolution of the Kano State executive committee and replaced it with a caretaker committee headed by Alhaji Umar Bala.

The move followed an announcement by Najaatu on Monday that the existing state leadership had been dissolved and a caretaker arrangement introduced to oversee the affairs of the party.

However, the Kano faction rejected the decision, arguing that it violated the ADC constitution and was not approved by the party’s recognised national leadership structures.

In the petition signed by Ungogo and the party’s Administrative Secretary, Dr Bala M. I. Takai, the group argued that only the National Executive Committee (NEC) or the National Working Committee (NWC) has the authority to establish caretaker committees.

“The power to constitute Caretaker Committees rests exclusively with the National Executive Committee (NEC) or the National Working Committee (NWC) via proper directives. No individual official possesses such authority,” the petition stated.

The faction also challenged Najaatu’s claim to the position of Deputy National Chairman (North-West), alleging that the office was removed during constitutional amendments approved at the party’s April 2026 national convention.

It further claimed that the leadership changes could create confusion among members and supporters if not addressed, urging the police to investigate the matter and take steps to prevent any possible breakdown of law and order.

The petition accused Najaatu of engaging in actions that could divide the party, alleging that she was attempting to create a parallel structure within the Kano chapter.

The dispute has widened divisions within the ADC in Kano, with both sides insisting they represent the legitimate leadership of the party.

While Najaatu’s camp maintains that the caretaker committee was established to restore order and strengthen the party structure, the existing state executive argues that it remains the recognised leadership under the party’s rules.

The Kano State Police Command had not issued a response to the petition as of the time of reporting.

The development comes as political parties across Nigeria intensify internal preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with leadership disputes and organisational changes becoming increasingly significant in shaping party structures.
