ICPC to Arraign Nasir El-Rufai in Fresh Corruption Case

ICPC arraigns Nasir El-Rufai over corruption charges at Federal High Court Kaduna, following weeks of detention and public pressure

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has announced plans to arraign former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, before the Federal High Court in Kaduna on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, over alleged corruption-related offences.

The ICPC said the former governor would be docked alongside one Joel Adoga in suit number FHC/KD/73/2026 at the Kaduna Judicial Division.

The charges include conversion and possession of public property as well as money laundering.

The planned arraignment follows rising pressure from stakeholders, including the African Democratic Congress, which had demanded either the immediate release or formal arraignment of the former governor.

Critics had described the prolonged detention without charges as a breach of constitutional rights.

The Muslim Rights Concern also condemned the detention, while members of the former governor’s family raised concerns over what they termed an extended and unjustified custody.

In a statement issued on Monday by its Head of Media and Public Communications, John Odey, the commission confirmed that the charges were filed on March 18, 2026.

The ICPC disclosed that a separate case, marked KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26, had also been filed before a Kaduna State High Court against El-Rufai and one Amadu Sule.

The counts in the state case include abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.

According to the commission, the date for arraignment in the state High Court would be communicated by the court in due course.

The anti-graft agency said the former governor had been duly served and reiterated its commitment to due process and the rule of law.

The development marks a critical moment in the ICPC arraigns Nasir El-Rufai case, coming after weeks of legal uncertainty and intense public scrutiny.

Reports indicate that El-Rufai was initially detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after honouring an invitation on February 16.

Although he was granted bail on February 18, he was subsequently taken into custody by the ICPC, where he has remained.
