Hamzat Launches Strategic GAC Consultations in Lagos Power Move

Hamzat GAC consultations begin as Lagos deputy governor meets key political elders amid growing 2027 governorship speculation

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Kadri Hamzat in Lagos, Nigeria, commenced high-level consultations with influential members of the Governance Advisory Council, marking a significant political engagement amid emerging succession discussions within the state’s ruling All Progressives Congress.

The engagement saw the deputy governor meet key political figures, including Otunba Busura Alebiosu Bush at his Kosofe residence, where he was received by Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Bush Alebiosu.

His entourage included Alhaji Mutiu Are, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and Razak Ajala, among other prominent political actors within the Lagos APC structure.

Hamzat also visited Alhaji Tajudeen Olusi, a senior figure within the Governance Advisory Council, as part of broader consultations aimed at strengthening internal dialogue and political cohesion.

In a statement shared via his verified X account, the deputy governor described the engagements as “honest and thoughtful conversations” centred on the future of Lagos State and the leadership required to sustain its growth trajectory.

He emphasised the importance of listening to experienced voices and building collaborative structures to ensure what he described as “a stronger Lagos.”

The Hamzat GAC consultations Lagos meetings come amid growing political speculation ahead of the 2027 governorship election, as attention begins to shift toward possible successors to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The Governance Advisory Council, widely regarded as a powerful decision-making body within Lagos politics, has historically played a central role in shaping leadership transitions within the state’s All Progressives Congress structure.

Recent political signals suggest increasing alignment around Hamzat as a potential continuity candidate, although no formal declaration has been made.

Analysts note that his engagement with party elders reflects a strategic effort to build consensus, strengthen internal support and reinforce stability within the ruling political structure.

Hamzat, known for his technocratic background in engineering and finance, has maintained a reputation for administrative discipline and measured public engagement since assuming office.

The timing of the consultations has drawn attention, particularly following recent remarks by APC stakeholders, including Hon James Faleke, who publicly expressed support for Hamzat’s potential candidacy.
