Edo Police rescue 16 kidnapped victims using drones and community support in daring operations along Benin highways
The Edo State Police Command, in response to multiple distress calls on August 23, 2025, mobilized teams from Iguobazuwa and Ekiadolor Divisions, working alongside tactical units, local vigilantes, and hunters.

Their rapid response followed reports of armed kidnappers blocking key sections of both highways and abducting several travellers.
In a powerful show of leadership, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, personally led operations on the Benin–Akure axis.
The team utilized drone surveillance and other advanced tools to comb the surrounding bush areas and pinpoint the captors’ locations.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, confirmed the outcome in a statement on Wednesday.
“Six victims were rescued along the Benin–Akure Road, including one with a gunshot wound who is currently receiving medical care. Three more victims were freed on the Benin–Lagos Road, and an additional seven regained their freedom on August 25,” the statement revealed.
Agbonika praised the effective synergy between the Police, local security teams, and community members.
He emphasized that the Edo Police rescue operations demonstrate the importance of joint efforts in curbing violent crimes on the state’s highways.
Assuring residents of the command’s continued vigilance, Agbonika added that efforts are still ongoing to locate any remaining victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The command remains committed to using both human intelligence and cutting-edge technology to ensure the safety of all road users.
