House launches probe into CNG policy implementation review to assess safety, distribution and legal framework of gas transition strategy
The House of Representatives has inaugurated an ad-hoc committee to investigate the CNG policy implementation review and assess how effectively the Federal Government is executing Nigeria’s transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner energy alternative.

Chairman of the committee, Hon. Ahmadu Jaha (APC–Borno), made this known at the committee’s inaugural sitting in Abuja on Friday.
He said the panel’s work would centre on evaluating the policy’s safety, viability, sustainability, and fairness in rollout across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
“The work before us is critical. We must assess how well the policy has been implemented and ensure that CNG centres are equitably distributed to give all Nigerians a sense of belonging,” Jaha said.
He stressed the need for thorough engagement with relevant ministries, departments, and agencies, international oil companies, and private stakeholders to align Nigeria’s gas infrastructure with global best practices.
The committee is also tasked with determining the adequacy of existing regulatory and legal frameworks guiding the policy, and recommending legislative actions where necessary.
We are committed to ensuring equity in implementation.
“In our deliberations, we must be guided by the mandate of this committee as captured in the votes and proceedings of the House. This will help us develop a practical and impactful work plan,” Jaha said.
The 11-member committee was inaugurated by the Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, on Thursday.
The probe follows a motion adopted by the House in May 2025, which called on the Federal Government to establish more CNG conversion centres and ensure equitable distribution across the country.
Lawmakers backing the motion highlighted the urgency of creating sustainable energy alternatives amidst rising fuel costs, environmental concerns, and the push for energy diversification.

The CNG policy implementation review comes at a time when Nigeria is exploring gas as a transitional energy source in its shift away from petrol and diesel, with the promise of cleaner emissions and lower operational costs.
