Ali Modu Sheriff Criticises Peter Obi, alleging the former Anambra governor leaves parties that deny him a presidential ticket ahead of 2027
Former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff has criticised former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, alleging that the opposition figure is unwilling to remain in any political party that does not offer him its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Sheriff argued that Obi’s political decisions are driven primarily by his presidential ambition rather than long-term loyalty to a political platform.
“The point is that he, Peter Obi, is a candidate and the last time you invited me here I told you that people like Peter Obi can never be in one political party because he is pursuing an agenda,” Sheriff said.
The former governor further alleged that Obi would leave any political party that declined to nominate him as its presidential candidate.
“If he can’t be a presidential candidate, he would move out. Today, he has gone to like 20 political parties to become a candidate,” Sheriff added.
Sheriff also used the interview to emphasise national unity, arguing that political ambition should not override commitment to Nigeria as a whole.
He said leaders should avoid promoting ethnic or regional interests above national identity.
“If I, Ali Modu Sheriff, will come out here and say that I only believe in Borno State and not Nigeria, then I’m not fit to be Nigerian because our leaders have fought to keep us together,” he said.
The comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with opposition parties and emerging coalitions exploring possible alliances to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, has remained a prominent opposition figure and continues to attract significant public support.
His political future has been the subject of widespread speculation as discussions over coalition-building and party alignments gather momentum ahead of the next election.
At the time of publication, Obi had not publicly responded to Sheriff’s remarks.

His supporters have consistently argued that his previous party movements reflected changing political circumstances rather than personal ambition, while Obi has repeatedly maintained that his focus remains on governance, accountability and national development.
