ADC Kano Crisis Deepens Over Executive Dissolution

ADC Kano Crisis Deepens as state chairman rejects executive dissolution claims while national leaders defend the appointment of a caretaker committee

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kano State has been thrown into uncertainty after conflicting claims emerged over the alleged dissolution of its state executive committee, with the state chairman Musa Ungogo rejecting the move as unconstitutional while the party’s national leadership insists the restructuring is valid.

The dispute began after the ADC Deputy National Chairman (North-West), Hajiya Najaatu Mohammed, announced on Monday that the Kano State executive had been dissolved and replaced with a caretaker committee led by Alhaji Umar Bala.

However, Ungogo dismissed the announcement, describing the claim as false and insisting that the Kano chapter had not received any official communication from the party’s national leadership regarding the alleged dissolution.

“There is no truth in the claim that the Kano State executive has been dissolved. No such decision has been communicated to us by the party’s national leadership,” Ungogo told PUNCH Online.

The Kano chairman questioned the constitutional basis of the decision, arguing that if the national leadership intended to dissolve state executives, similar action would have been taken across other states rather than targeting Kano alone.

“There is no similar action taken in any other state. So why Kano? The claim is unfounded and does not follow the party’s constitutional procedures,” he said.

Ungogo maintained that the existing Kano State executive remained the legitimate leadership of the party and would continue carrying out its responsibilities until a properly authorised decision was issued through the appropriate party structures.

Earlier, Najaatu announced the formation of the caretaker committee during a press briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre in Kano, stating that the action was taken in accordance with the ADC constitution, the Electoral Act and the need to protect the party’s organisational stability.

She named Umar Bala as caretaker committee chairman and Isma’il Musa as secretary, urging party members to support the transitional arrangement.

Najaatu also stressed that the decision should not be interpreted as a judgement against the commitment or loyalty of existing party members who had contributed to building the ADC in Kano.

The disagreement has created a leadership dispute within the party’s Kano chapter, with the elected state executive and the newly announced caretaker committee both claiming authority over the party structure.
