Bayelsa Deputy Governor Vacancy Spurs Political Contest

Bayelsa State deputy governor vacancy sparks political contest as Governor Diri considers successors, balancing zoning rules and experienced candidates

The sudden death of Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has created a leadership vacuum, prompting urgent deliberations over his successor and raising critical political questions ahead of the 2027 elections.

Governor Douye Diri, who holds the constitutional power to nominate a replacement, is required to present a candidate to the State House of Assembly for confirmation.

The Bayelsa government has declared a three-working-day mourning period and directed that all public flags fly at half-mast in honour of the late deputy governor.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away while actively performing official duties, had previously served as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure and Senator representing Bayelsa West.

Governor Diri described his death as “profoundly shocking” and a “great loss to the government, people of Bayelsa State, and the nation.”

Political sources indicate four front-runners for the position: incumbent Speaker, Rt Hon Abraham Ingobere; Dr Peter Akpe, Chief of Staff to Governor Diri; APC State Chairman, Dr Dennis Otiotio; and Christopher Ewhrudjakpo, elder brother of the late deputy governor.

Two candidates—Dr Akpe and Christopher Ewhrudjakpo—hail from Bayelsa West and comply with zoning expectations, while Ingobere and Otiotio, from Bayelsa East, may face opposition due to senatorial district considerations.

Dr Peter Akpe, a veteran public administrator, has served in various capacities within the Bayelsa State civil service and legislature, including Deputy Chief of Staff, Acting Chief of Staff, and member of the State House of Assembly.

Christopher Ewhrudjakpo recently retired as permanent secretary in the State Ministry of Education and currently serves as an aide to Governor Diri.

Political observers stress that the nominee must be politically astute, experienced in administration, and capable of supporting the governor amid preparations for the 2027 elections.

Former Ijaw Youth Congress President Udengs Eradiri said the choice must combine administrative competence with political clout to manage stakeholders effectively.

State PDP members have emphasised that the new deputy governor should come from their party, noting that Senator Ewhrudjakpo was a card-carrying PDP member until his death.

The party insists its input be considered to maintain peace, justice, and party cohesion.

The selection process, while constitutionally straightforward, carries significant political weight, given Bayelsa’s history of strategic appointments and the need to balance zoning principles, party interests, and the demands of governance in the run-up to national elections.
