Bafarawa Firmly Denies APC Membership Claims

Former Sokoto governor Attahiru Bafarawa has dismissed claims of APC membership, describing the reports as false and misleading

Former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, on Thursday firmly denied reports alleging that he had joined the All Progressives Congress, describing the claims as false, unfounded and malicious.

Bafarawa, who resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party in January 2025, made the clarification in a statement issued in Sokoto, insisting that he has no intention of returning to partisan politics or affiliating with any political party.

The former governor said the reports linking him to the APC were misleading and lacked any factual basis, stressing that his withdrawal from party politics earlier in the year was deliberate and final.

Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa explained that his decision to leave the PDP was informed by a desire to focus fully on youth empowerment and humanitarian service, without the distractions or conflicts associated with political affiliations.

He said his current engagement centres on creating opportunities for young people, fostering innovation and promoting values that support long-term national development.

Addressing speculation surrounding his alleged alignment with the APC, Bafarawa said the confusion may have arisen from the decision of some of his former supporters to join the ruling party.

He clarified that while his supporters remain free to associate with any political party of their choice, their actions should not be interpreted as a reflection of his personal political stance.

The former governor added that his supporters’ decision to align with the APC was largely influenced by their support for the administration of Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, particularly in the area of security.

Bafarawa noted that although he was a founding member of the APC during its formation in 2013, he withdrew at an early stage due to irreconcilable differences and did not participate in the party’s subsequent activities.

He described suggestions that he recently joined the APC as laughable, stating that he had neither attended party meetings nor engaged in any political negotiations.

Bafarawa served two terms as governor of Sokoto State between 1999 and 2007 and remains an influential figure in the state, despite maintaining a firm distance from partisan politics.
