Tinubu Holds Critical Talks with NLC Over Rising Tensions

President Tinubu meets NLC leaders in Abuja to address workers’ demands and prevent nationwide protests in Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu convened a high-stakes meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress at the State House on Tuesday night to address mounting tensions over workers’ welfare and unresolved labour demands.

The discussions, attended by key stakeholders including Hope Uzodimma, chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, Kebbi State Governor Dr Nasir Idris, and Minister of State for Labour Honourable Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, focused on escalating concerns about wages, relief measures, and the socio-economic impact of government reforms.

The NLC delegation was led by its chairman, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and senior national officers. According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the meeting sought to forestall the nationwide protest recently threatened by organised labour over delayed implementation of previously agreed concessions.

Organised labour had warned that the government’s inaction could spark industrial unrest and street protests across major cities.

While no details of the discussions or agreements have yet been released, the meeting signalled a willingness on both sides to engage amid growing public concern over workers’ conditions and the rising cost of living.

Observers noted that the presence of multiple governors alongside federal ministers highlighted the significance of the dialogue, with analysts describing it as a critical effort to stabilise relations between the government and organised labour.

The NLC’s next steps, including consultations with its constituent organs, are expected to be announced in the coming days as the labour group assesses whether sufficient progress was made during the State House discussions.
