Atiku Abubakar joins ADC, declares “real opposition has begun”

Atiku Abubakar joins ADC, urging supporters to register and marking the start of the “real opposition” ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar formally joined the African Democratic Congress on Monday, declaring that “the real opposition has begun” as he received his ADC membership card in Jada 1 Ward, Adamawa State.

The move ends months of speculation over his next political step following his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party.

“Now I have picked up my membership card of the ADC. Now, the real opposition has begun.

We will chase the APC out of government,” Atiku said, urging his supporters nationwide to register with the ADC and join the new political front.

Adamawa ADC Chairman Shehu Yohanna, who co-conducted the registration, described Atiku’s entry as the official launch of statewide registration across all local governments and wards.

He called on youths and women to take active part in the party’s expansion.

Senator Sadiq Yar’Adua, National Secretary of the ADC Registration and Mobilisation Committee, reinforced Atiku’s call, urging Nigerians to register to vote and “take ownership of the nation’s political future.”

The unveiling attracted prominent Adamawa political figures, including former Governor Bindow Jibrilla, Senators Aishatu Binani, Ahmed Barata, Aziz Nyako, and Ishaku Abbo, signalling a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku resigned from the PDP in July, citing irreconcilable internal differences and a departure from the party’s founding ideals.

He described his exit as “heartbreaking.”

Reports had earlier indicated that Atiku and other opposition leaders, including former Minister Rotimi Amaechi, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, and former APC chairman John Oyegun, agreed to adopt the ADC as a platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
