PDP maintains its 2025 national convention in Ibadan will proceed despite conflicting court rulings and internal leadership disputes
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed that its 2025 national convention, scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, will go ahead as planned despite a recent court ruling.

In a statement on Wednesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba dismissed claims of a postponement as “false, misleading, and the handiwork of political detractors.”
“The 2025 national convention of the PDP has not been postponed but will go on as scheduled… We urge all party members and Nigerians to disregard misleading claims being peddled by some individuals recruited by the All Progressives Congress,” the statement said.
The clarification comes amid conflicting positions within the party. A faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had earlier announced a suspension of the convention, citing a Federal High Court, Abuja ruling that restrained the PDP from proceeding pending resolution of a leadership dispute. The party has filed an appeal before the Court of Appeal.
Meanwhile, a High Court in Oyo State issued an ex parte order allowing the convention to proceed, which the PDP National Working Committee and the Board of Trustees have cited as the legal basis for continuing preparations.
Acting National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu emphasized that the Abuja ruling takes precedence over the Oyo order, arguing that matters involving national institutions fall within the Federal High Court’s jurisdiction.
The conflicting legal decisions reflect deep divisions within the party. Anyanwu also dismissed reports of his absence from a Board of Trustees meeting supporting the convention, calling it “a gathering of friends and associates, not an official BoT meeting.”
He further revealed that the PDP national secretariat in Abuja was temporarily closed earlier this week after a suspected threat by unknown assailants, noting that police intervention was required to ensure staff safety.
Despite internal disputes, both factions maintain that the PDP remains committed to democracy, the rule of law, and peace.

The Ibadan convention, expected to elect new national officers and strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections, is seen as a crucial test of the opposition’s cohesion amid legal and political uncertainty.
