Fubara Sacks Commissioners After Supreme Court Ruling

Fubara sacks commissioners and public officers in Rivers after Supreme Court ruling, pledges renewed commitment to governance.

Fubara sacks commissioners and other public officials in a sweeping shake-up of Rivers State’s executive council, citing a Supreme Court judgment as the trigger for the immediate dismissals.

The decision, which took effect on Wednesday, was confirmed in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, in Port Harcourt.

It marks a pivotal moment in the state’s political landscape, coming just days after Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary celebrations.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara formally announced the dissolution of his cabinet during a valedictory session with former commissioners and appointees at Government House, thanking them for their contributions over the past two years.

“The governor highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s Independence and called on all Nigerians to work together with Mr President to build a peaceful, secure and prosperous country and a brighter future for all,” the statement read.

The move follows the exit of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), the administrator who led the state under emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu.

Upon assuming control, Ibas had suspended all commissioners and dissolved boards across ministries and agencies appointed by Fubara.

Though Ibas handed over power on 18 September, the fate of the suspended officials remained unclear until now. With this announcement, Fubara sacks commissioners formally and signals the beginning of a restructured administration.

The Rivers State House of Assembly, in its first sitting post-emergency rule, had earlier urged the governor to submit a new list of commissioner-nominees for screening along with the 2025 budget.
