The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) announced a fresh 24-hour deadline following the expiration of an earlier 10-day ultimatum on September 10.

This decision came after a six-hour virtual meeting of the association’s National Executive Council on Wednesday.

Despite acknowledging the government’s renewed commitment, NARD insists that immediate disbursement and concrete actions must follow.

The doctors are demanding:

  •  Immediate payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF)
  •  Settlement of five months’ salary arrears from the 25–35% Consolidated Medical Salary Structure review
  •  Payment of 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears
  •  Disbursement of specialist allowances
  •  Restoration of recognition of the West African postgraduate certificates
  •  Implementation of the 2024 CONMESS
  •  Resolution of Kaduna State welfare issues
  •  Attention to the plight of resident doctors at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso

According to NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara, over 2,000 doctors are yet to receive the MRTF.

“If there is no payment by today (Thursday), then tomorrow (Friday), we will start the strike immediately,” he said.

Resident doctors are critical to Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Any disruption often results in nationwide service paralysis, putting thousands of patients at risk and straining remaining staff and infrastructure.
