Basic Healthcare Provision Fund Nigeria Delivers N50bn Boost to PHCs Nationwide

Basic Healthcare Provision Fund Nigeria disburses N50bn to PHCs, with 4,362 centres upgraded and 37 million visits recorded in early 2025

The Basic Healthcare Provision Fund Nigeria has disbursed nearly ₦50 billion directly to Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the country since 2023, according to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate.

Announcing the milestone via his official X handle on Monday, Pate stated that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is driving a data-backed overhaul of the national health system, with major results already visible in infrastructure, insurance coverage, and patient reach.

“Nearly ₦50 billion has been disbursed directly to PHCs nationwide with verifiably impressive results,” Pate wrote.

“This has led to qualitative modernisation of health infrastructure across all LGAs of Nigeria.”

Under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) — financed from at least 1% of the Federal Government’s Consolidated Revenue Fund and supported by donor contributions — the goal is to deliver a Basic Minimum Package of Health Services (BMPHS) to citizens through well-equipped and accessible local centres.

The minister revealed that an additional ₦20 billion has been allocated for the rehabilitation and upgrade of 4,362 PHCs across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Southern states are also benefiting from similar federal support under the fund.

“We are overseeing a data-driven re-engineering of basic healthcare provision for Africa’s largest population,” Pate added.

These figures reflect what observers are calling a “transformative” shift in grassroots healthcare delivery, with improved access to maternal care, immunisation, and basic treatment, especially in underserved communities.

“The BHCPF is not just a fund; it is a life-saving mechanism to restore dignity and access to healthcare in every corner of Nigeria,” said a senior health official familiar with the implementation.

Prof. Pate affirmed that President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda is committed to expanding equitable health coverage, enhancing infrastructure, and accelerating insurance enrollment in alignment with global best practices.

The improvements are already helping to close access gaps, reduce out-of-pocket expenses, and strengthen community-based healthcare — especially critical in rural and semi-urban areas.
