PDP Grassroots Election Strategy will Challenge APC, Says Bala Mohammed

PDP grassroots election strategy vows to challenge APC as Bala Mohammed rallies party unity, calls for discipline, and outlines 2025 convention preparations

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has declared that the PDP grassroots election strategy will offer the All Progressives Congress (APC) a formidable contest in the next general elections.

Speaking at the 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, he pledged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would provide a credible platform for Nigerians.

“We will give the APC credible running for their money,” the governor stated, emphasising the PDP’s resolve to engage Nigerians meaningfully at the grassroots.

He urged party members to avoid abusing defectors, insisting the party must leave room for reconciliation within a defined period.

Mohammed stressed that the PDP remains the most capable opposition party and best suited to drive coalitions or alliances.

“We are working behind the scenes to ensure we remain intact,” he said.

He warned against internal indiscipline, noting that it had previously damaged the party’s cohesion and credibility.

He also praised the current National Working Committee (NWC) for showing selflessness and flexibility. “They have shown that at least they are with us,” he added.

Acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, downplayed the threat of a recently formed opposition coalition, saying: “This political experiment is nothing to lose sleep over.”

He confirmed that many former members had returned and that even non-PDP coalition members were abandoning the venture.

The NEC announced that its elective National Convention would now hold on 15–16 November 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The venue and timeline were changed from Kano and August respectively. A communiqué confirmed that INEC would be formally notified, and zoning and convention committees were approved.

The NEC also instructed the NWC to seek legal redress to recover seats of elected members who defected to other parties, citing constitutional provisions.

Members were warned against affiliating with other political parties, as dual membership contravenes the law.

Former governors and senior members of the party have reportedly supported coalition activities for 2027, including David Mark, Atiku Abubakar, and Aminu Tambuwal. However, the PDP Board of Trustees insists that the convention is a crucial moment.

BoT Secretary Ahmed Makarfi stated: “The success of the items scheduled is what will bring most of them back.

If we work together, the convention should resolve all grievances. It’s an opportunity, and we must not miss it.”
