Wike Vows to Resign if Tinubu Loses FCT, Rivers

Wike resignation vow ties his ministerial future to Tinubu’s performance in the FCT and Rivers State in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has vowed to resign from office on 17 January 2027 if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu loses the presidential election in both the FCT and Rivers State.

Nyesom Wike made the declaration on Wednesday during an engagement with leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja, where he linked his continued service as FCT minister to his ability to secure political support for Tinubu in the two territories.

“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Nyesom Wike said.

The minister went further by setting a specific date for his proposed resignation.

“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.

The declaration places Nyesom Wike’s ministerial position directly alongside the political campaign he is conducting for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for 16 January 2027, with the governorship and State House of Assembly elections due on 6 February.

Nyesom Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and former member of the Peoples Democratic Party, has remained an influential figure in President Tinubu’s administration despite belonging to a different political party.

His appointment as FCT minister followed his support for Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, when Nyesom Wike and members of the PDP’s G5 group declined to support the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Since joining the Federal Executive Council, Nyesom Wike has continued to identify himself with President Tinubu’s political programme while maintaining his membership of the PDP.

The latest declaration represents an unusually direct pledge of personal accountability for electoral performance.

Nyesom Wike said the FCT is where he works while Rivers State is his home state, arguing that failure to deliver political support for Tinubu in either location would raise questions about his continued suitability for the ministerial role.

“FCT is where I work. Rivers State is my state, right? And if I cannot deliver where I work, then I am not worthy to be here,” Nyesom Wike said.

He also challenged other political appointees to accept comparable responsibility for electoral performance in their areas of political influence.

The minister’s comments came during an engagement with members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association, whose representatives have been involved in discussions with the FCT Administration over the proposed relocation of mechanics and traders from the Apo area.

The relocation issue has been a recurring concern for traders and mechanics operating around the Apo Mechanic Village corridor.

Nyesom Wike used the meeting to discuss both the interests of the traders and his political mobilisation plans ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said a multi-party political arrangement was being developed in the FCT to support candidates backed by his political camp.

“We are doing rainbow coalition. Even people in the PDP, we are supporting Tinubu,” Nyesom Wike said.

The minister also publicly endorsed Tinubu for the presidency and named former FCT minister and senator Philip Aduda as the candidate he was supporting for the Senate.

Nyesom Wike said two former area council chairmen were also being backed for seats in the House of Representatives.

“Let us be clear on direction: for the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu! For the Senate, Philip Aduda is a man of the people,” he said.

He described the arrangement as a unified coalition operating across party lines in the FCT.

“In the FCT, we are running a unified coalition across parties to deliver results,” Nyesom Wike said.

The political arrangement reflects the unusual position Nyesom Wike occupies ahead of the 2027 election.

He remains a PDP member while serving in the cabinet of an APC president and openly campaigning for Tinubu’s re-election.

That position has made Nyesom Wike a prominent figure in the political realignment ahead of the next election, particularly as opposition parties work towards coalition arrangements aimed at challenging the APC.

His latest statement also places the FCT at the centre of his political strategy.

The FCT does not have a governorship election because the territory is administered by the federal government through a minister appointed by the President.

The territory nonetheless votes in presidential, Senate and House of Representatives elections.

Rivers State, meanwhile, carries a different significance for Nyesom Wike. He served as the state’s governor from 2015 to 2023 and remains an influential political figure there.

By linking the results in both territories to his ministerial future, Nyesom Wike has effectively made the 2027 presidential contest a personal political test.

He also said political appointees should be prepared to accept responsibility when the candidates they support perform poorly in their areas of influence.

“I want other people to take these kinds of challenges. I have taken Rivers State and FCT; let everybody take,” he said.

The statement has added a dramatic personal element to the preparations for the 2027 election, although Nyesom Wike’s proposed resignation would remain his own political commitment rather than an automatic constitutional consequence of an electoral result.

The 2027 presidential election will determine whether President Tinubu secures another term, while the outcome in Rivers and the FCT will also be closely watched because of the political significance Nyesom Wike has attached to both locations.

For now, the minister is concentrating on mobilisation.

His message to the Apo gathering was that support for Tinubu should extend beyond one political party and encompass a broader coalition capable of delivering votes across the FCT.

Nyesom Wike concluded by reaffirming that his political standing as FCT minister should be judged, in his view, by whether he can deliver the electoral support he has promised.

“If I cannot deliver FCT as Minister, then I am not qualified to hold this office. We have a firm agreement, and today is the final affirmation,” he said. Punch Newspapers

With the presidential election scheduled for 16 January 2027, Nyesom Wike has now set 17 January as the date on which he says he will make good on his resignation pledge if Tinubu loses both the FCT and Rivers State.
