The political contest ahead of the 2027 Ogun State governorship election has taken a fresh legal turn as former All Progressives Congress governorship aspirant Hon. Abayomi Hunye filed a suit against the party’s candidate, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Hunye is asking the court to examine previous electoral documents allegedly submitted under oath by Adeola to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), particularly nomination forms used during his earlier elections in Lagos State.
According to Hunye’s media adviser, Femi Oyewale, the lawsuit centres on whether the state of origin declared by Adeola in his earlier INEC documents is consistent with subsequent declarations.
Addressing journalists, Hunye’s legal adviser, Victor Olamide, stressed that the case is not a challenge to Adeola’s claim of being an indigene of Yewa in Ogun State.
“We are not challenging the indigeneity of Senator Olamilekan Adeola as a Yewa son. What we are bringing before the court is a matter of statutory integrity and constitutional compliance,” Victor said.
He explained that the court would be asked to determine the state of origin Adeola declared in previous INEC nomination forms and whether any inconsistency exists in documents sworn to under oath.
Victor argued that if a person deliberately makes conflicting declarations in sworn electoral documents, such conduct could carry legal consequences. He added that certified true copies of the relevant INEC records would be presented before the court as evidence.
The disputed historical documents were not publicly released during the briefing.
Speaking on the suit, Hunye said he was not asking the public to determine the outcome of the dispute but wanted the judiciary to examine the APC nomination process under the Electoral Act.
“I am not asking the media or the public to declare me the candidate. I am asking the judiciary to look at the process, examine the facts under the Electoral Act, and allow the law to take its proper course,” Hunye said.
The legal action comes amid heightened controversy over the APC governorship ticket in Ogun State, with the party preparing for the 2027 election.
As of the time of filing this report, Senator Adeola had not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the suit.
