Adeleke, Osun APC Renew Fierce Security Dispute After IGP Visit

A tense Osun Security Dispute intensifies as Governor Adeleke and APC clash after IGP Olatunji Disu’s visit ahead of the 2026 governorship vote

A renewed political confrontation unfolded in Osun State, Nigeria, on 6 July 2026, as Ademola Adeleke, Governor of Osun State, and the All Progressives Congress exchanged sharp words over security arrangements following a fact-finding visit by Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu ahead of the 15 August 2026 governorship election.

The latest escalation comes days after the police chief’s engagement with political leaders and security stakeholders in the state, a visit widely expected to ease tensions but which has instead reignited political accusations and counter-claims over impartiality in law enforcement.

Governor Adeleke, through a statement issued by his spokesperson Olawale Rasheed, maintained that residents of Osun State expect “impartial policing before, during and after the election,” urging security agencies to implement measures that would strengthen public confidence and fairness in the electoral process.

The governor described the Inspector-General’s visit as constructive, noting that it provided a platform for political parties to present their concerns. He insisted that the outcomes should now translate into practical action on the ground.

“The discussions during the visit should guide the immediate implementation of agreed measures aimed at ensuring non-partisan law enforcement across Osun State,” Governor Adeleke said.

He added, “We appreciate the visit of the Inspector General of Police and that of the Deputy Inspector General a week earlier. The facts are out in the public domain. The IGP has heard and read from both parties.”

In a pointed appeal for accountability, Governor Adeleke also called on the Commissioner of Police in Osun State to remain neutral in handling politically related cases, stressing that arrests and prosecutions must be carried out without bias.

“We seek the arrest of any law breaker irrespective of their political affiliation. Those who commit crimes should be arrested and prosecuted. We harbour no thugs in Government House or anywhere,” he said, reinforcing his administration’s position on neutrality.

He further urged security agencies to guarantee a safe environment for voters, warning that violence and intimidation could undermine democratic participation. His remarks come amid heightened political tension as campaigning intensifies ahead of the election.

However, the All Progressives Congress in Osun State countered the governor’s narrative, alleging that comments made during the Inspector-General’s visit validated its earlier claims regarding the alleged shielding of individuals accused of political violence.

In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the party argued that the Inspector-General had effectively directed the state police leadership to address the allegations professionally and without bias.

The APC further claimed that investigations should not be restricted and suggested that inquiries extend beyond the Government House if necessary, insisting that suspected political actors had been protected from arrest.

The party also criticised remarks by the state Commissioner for Information, describing his response to the police chief’s comments as “misplaced” and poorly timed, while accusing the administration of politicising sensitive security matters.

At the centre of the dispute remains growing mistrust between both sides over the neutrality of security operations in the state, a situation observers say could shape the tone of the upcoming election.

As the 15 August vote approaches, attention now turns to whether the police leadership will succeed in calming tensions and ensuring a secure electoral environment, or whether the political rift will deepen further in the weeks ahead.
