INEC Receives 80% Materials for Calm Osun Election Prep

Osun Election Materials Delivery reaches 80% as INEC advances preparations, boosts security coordination ahead of August governorship election

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, confirmed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received 80 per cent of the non-sensitive materials required for the forthcoming Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.

The update came during a press briefing held at INEC’s state headquarters in Osogbo, where Mrs Babalola assured stakeholders that preparations for the election were progressing steadily and in line with the official timetable.

The electoral commission said logistics arrangements were being strengthened to ensure the timely deployment and secure storage of election materials ahead of polling day, with close coordination already established with security agencies across the state.

Mrs Babalola said INEC was working with security operatives to safeguard electoral materials, noting that protection measures were critical to ensuring a smooth and credible process.

“We are collaborating with relevant security agencies to ensure the safe storage of the materials,” she said.

Beyond logistics, the Resident Electoral Commissioner raised concerns over voter participation, urging stakeholders to intensify civic education and public awareness campaigns to address potential voter apathy ahead of the election.

She called on political parties, civil society organisations, religious leaders, traditional institutions, journalists and other stakeholders to play active roles in encouraging eligible voters to participate in the electoral process.

According to her, a credible election depends not only on institutional readiness but also on public engagement and trust in the democratic process.

Mrs Babalola also appealed to media organisations to maintain balance and professionalism in their coverage of the election period, warning against reportage that could inflame political tensions.

“The media should not overheat the polity. We urge journalists to cooperate with the commission through balanced and credible reportage,” she said.

INEC’s update comes as political parties in Osun State intensify mobilisation efforts ahead of what is expected to be a closely contested governorship election, with heightened attention on electoral logistics, security readiness and voter turnout across the state.
