Imran Wakili Says Atiku, ADC Face Setback After Babachir Lawal’s Exit

Political commentator claims former SGF’s departure has weakened the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections

Political commentator Imran Wakili has claimed that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may struggle to recover from the political fallout following the exit of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

The remarks add to growing political discussions surrounding the Atiku ADC Babachir Lawal saga as opposition parties continue positioning themselves ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

In a post shared on his X handle on Thursday, Wakili alleged that Lawal’s actions had contributed to the departure of several prominent politicians from the ADC, leaving the party significantly weakened.

“The damage Babachir did to Atiku and ADC, there is no coming back from it. Bindow is gone, nobody is left in ADC except Atiku himself.

“Bindow gone, why? Babachir. Abbo gone, why? Babachir. Binani gone, why? Babachir. Nyako gone, why? Babachir. Nafiu Bala legal case, why? Babachir,” Wakili wrote.

The comments followed Lawal’s resignation from the African Democratic Congress last month.

Explaining his decision at the time, the former SGF said he could not remain in a party he accused of operating what he described as a “rigging machine” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lawal also accused Atiku and his political allies of pursuing ethnic and religious interests, arguing that the former vice president’s emergence as a presidential candidate would ultimately improve President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term.
