Oluyede Declares No Godfather in Ekiti Governorship Race

Wole Oluyede, the PDP governorship candidate in Ekiti State, has declared he has no political godfather ahead of Saturday’s election. He insists the people of Ekiti are his only godfather

In Ado-Ekiti on 19 June 2026, Wole Oluyede, the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate for Ekiti State, declared he has no political godfather and that the people of the state remain his only true backers as the keenly contested election approaches this Saturday.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oluyede distanced himself from the traditional godfather system that has long defined Ekiti politics. “The truth about it is on record. Everybody knows that the godfather I have is the people themselves,” he said.

The candidate highlighted his personal investment in the state, saying he had committed his own money, time and energy to prove that governance could be different.

“In the history of this state, I’m the only person at this time trusting the state to think that we can invest in this state,” he added.

Oluyede also voiced serious concerns about the conduct of security agencies in the run-up to the poll.

He claimed his supporters had been arrested without clear explanation while alleged APC agents in his hometown carried out attacks with machetes and faced no consequences.

“I am very wary and suspicious of the fairness of the present police force in Ekiti,” he stated, urging authorities to ensure a level playing field.

The remarks come as political tensions rise ahead of the off-cycle gubernatorial election.

Ekiti, known for its strong political consciousness and history of fierce contests, has often seen godfather influence play a major role in determining candidates and outcomes.

Oluyede’s rejection of such structures positions him as an independent voice within the PDP, focusing instead on grassroots support and personal credibility.

The candidate used the platform to appeal directly to voters, emphasising hope, transparency and a break from past patterns of political patronage.

His message seeks to resonate with residents tired of elite-controlled politics and yearning for accountable leadership.

As campaigns enter their final stretch, all eyes remain on how the Independent National Electoral Commission and security forces will manage the process to guarantee credibility and peace on election day.
