NDC Replaces Kwankwasiyya Candidates Over 60-40 Agreement in Kano

NDC Kwankwasiyya power sharing dispute leads to candidate replacements in Kano as party enforces 60-40 agreement ahead of elections

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has replaced several candidates earlier submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State, following the implementation of a controversial power-sharing agreement between both groups ahead of the upcoming elections.

Dispute emerged after the party announced revisions to its candidate list, citing the need to enforce an earlier 60-40 arrangement reached between the NDC leadership and the Kwankwasiyya bloc.

According to an official document signed by the Kano State Chairman of the party, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, and obtained by Siyasarmu TV, the adjustments were made to reflect what was described as a pre-existing understanding on the distribution of elective positions.

The document was also reportedly copied to the party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman, Alhaji Muhammadu Rabi’u Sabo Bakinzuwo.

Under the revised list, the party approved new candidates for several federal constituencies, including Kumbotso, Nassarawa, Kano Municipal, Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Sumaila/Takai and Gwale.

Adjustments were also made to State House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu constituencies, reflecting a broad restructuring of the party’s electoral slate in the state.

Party officials explained that the agreement allocated 60 per cent of elective positions to the Kwankwasiyya bloc, while the remaining 40 per cent was reserved for the NDC’s internal structure.

However, tensions reportedly emerged within the party after concerns were raised that the initial distribution did not fully reflect the agreed formula, prompting internal consultations and the latest revisions.

Speaking on the development, NDC spokesperson Comrade Ibrahim Waya said the decision was taken to prevent escalation of internal disputes and maintain cohesion within the alliance.

“There was an understanding on the 60-40 sharing formula between the party leadership and Senator Kwankwaso. The action was taken urgently to avoid crisis within the party,” Waya stated.

The development is expected to intensify political negotiations within the alliance as both sides continue discussions over the final allocation of positions ahead of the elections.
