Olawepo-Hashim Urges Tinubu to Shift Election Timetable

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim urges President Tinubu to adjust election timetable to September, citing fairness and credible 2027 polls

Former presidential candidate and energy entrepreneur Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has urged President Bola Tinubu to support a shift in Nigeria’s political party primaries to September, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

Olawepo-Hashim made the appeal in an open letter addressed to the President, warning that the current timetable for party primaries could weaken internal democracy and affect the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released by his media office on Thursday, April 30, 2026, he argued that Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act provides sufficient flexibility for political parties to conduct primaries up to mid-September.

He stressed that aligning with this timeline would promote transparency, inclusiveness, and fairness across party structures.

According to him, the current rush towards early primaries limits political participation, increases internal party tensions, and risks disenfranchising aspirants.

Olawepo-Hashim warned that a compressed electoral process could deepen disputes within political parties and reduce public trust in the electoral system.

He also expressed concern that a non-competitive political environment could threaten Nigeria’s democratic stability.

The former presidential candidate referenced Nigeria’s democratic history, noting that present gains were achieved through long struggles against military rule and must be protected through reforms.

He called for broader improvements to the electoral framework, including a review of contentious provisions in the Electoral Act and stronger safeguards for fair competition.

Olawepo-Hashim further emphasised the importance of building confidence in electoral institutions, describing public trust as essential for peaceful and credible elections.

He maintained that allowing adequate time for primaries would strengthen internal democracy and improve the quality of candidates emerging for elective positions.

The politician expressed optimism that President Tinubu would consider the recommendations in the interest of national stability and political cohesion.
