Obi made the clarification during a recent interview, following public speculation that the closed-door engagement between both leaders amounted to political backing ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to his former campaign spokesman Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the meeting formed part of Obi’s broader consultations with national figures as he builds support for his anticipated presidential bid.
Tanko explained that the discussion focused on national unity, youth participation in politics, and the need for stronger representation from the South-East region.
He added that the outreach was aimed at engaging respected statesmen, including Jonathan, as part of efforts to deepen political dialogue ahead of the elections.
Obi’s media representative, Ibrahim Umar, also confirmed that the engagement was not an endorsement discussion but a courtesy consultation with the former president.
Peter Obi himself emphasised that no endorsement had been secured at this stage, noting that such discussions would only happen formally once he becomes an official candidate.
He further stated that Goodluck Jonathan expressed concerns about the importance of credible, free, and fair elections, while cautioning against political systems that limit democratic competition.
