Segun Showunmi declares bold bid for Ogun governorship

Segun Showunmi Ogun governorship bid declared in Abeokuta as PDP chieftain urges coalition politics ahead of 2027 Ogun election

Otunba Segun Showunmi, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and convener of The Alternative, formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election during a courtesy visit to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) secretariat in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria on Friday, marking a significant escalation in the Segun Showunmi Ogun governorship bid ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The declaration, delivered in a measured but firm tone, positioned Otunba Segun Showunmi as a leading voice advocating for broader political participation and coalition building in Ogun State politics, as he urged opposition parties to unite in challenging what he described as entrenched political dominance.

Otunba Segun Showunmi said governance in Ogun State should not be treated as a closed contest, stressing that the electorate must be given a genuine opportunity to choose leaders rather than being presented with predetermined outcomes.

He stated that he would be running for governor in 2027 and appealed to political stakeholders to begin strategic collaboration early, describing the process as essential for delivering what he called credible and people focused leadership.

The Ogun governorship bid also highlighted his call for the formation of a grassroots driven coalition among opposition groups, which he said would strengthen competitiveness and improve democratic accountability in the state.

In his remarks, Otunba Segun Showunmi questioned whether Ogun State would allow what he described as a “coronation” or embrace a genuinely competitive political process that reflects the will of the people.

He also acknowledged long standing regional concerns, noting that Ogun West has historically been excluded from producing a governor, describing the aspiration of the zone as legitimate and deserving of fair political consideration.

However, he emphasised that political aspiration must be tested through open competition, insisting that leadership should emerge from ideas, debate and public engagement rather than entitlement or consensus arrangements.

Otunba Segun Showunmi further called for an issue based campaign approach ahead of the 2027 elections, rejecting what he described as money driven politics and urging aspirants to subject themselves to public debate on the future direction of Ogun State.

He positioned himself as a candidate committed to transparency and public accountability, challenging other aspirants to engage in structured debate on governance priorities and development strategies.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Inter Party Advisory Council in Ogun State, Comrade Abayomi Sanyaolu, welcomed the PDP chieftain and urged political actors to exercise caution and responsibility in leadership selection processes, warning that poor choices could have long term consequences.

Also speaking, Abayomi Arabambi, Southwest Vice Chairman of the Labour Party, said Ogun State required urgent political renewal and encouraged greater public participation in shaping its leadership future through collaboration and coalition building.
