Doguwa Backs Garo as APC Picks Deputy Governor Choice

Murtala Garo deputy governor nomination gains APC backing as 27 of 31 stakeholders endorse him for Kano leadership position

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Downstream Petroleum Committee, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has provided fresh details on the internal consensus within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, where a majority of stakeholders reportedly backed Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo for nomination as Deputy Governor.

The nomination gained momentum after Doguwa confirmed that 27 out of 31 APC stakeholders present at a key meeting supported Garo as the preferred candidate following the resignation of Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

Doguwa commended Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for what he described as a rare act of political courtesy, noting that the governor allowed the legacy APC bloc to propose a replacement nominee.

He said the decision reflected political maturity and a willingness to promote unity across party lines, describing it as an uncommon gesture in Nigeria’s political history.

According to him, the governor also allocated vacant positions, including three commissioner slots, to members of the APC legacy group as part of efforts to strengthen internal cohesion.

Doguwa explained that the stakeholders’ meeting was presided over by former Kano State Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who was recognised as leader of the legacy APC faction in the state.

He said the meeting ended with overwhelming support for Murtala Sule Garo, describing him as the most suitable candidate based on political experience, grassroots influence, and electoral relevance.

Doguwa noted that Garo previously served as the APC deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections and maintains strong political reach across Kano’s 44 local government areas.

He also referenced Garo’s ties to the Gwarzo-Kabo federal constituency, describing it as strategically significant within the state’s political structure.

While acknowledging the presence of dissenting voices, Doguwa stated that the consensus among the majority made Garo the clear preferred nominee of the legacy APC bloc.

He added that although three names were submitted in line with procedural requirements, Garo remained the dominant choice, describing the others as “supporting nominations” intended to satisfy formal guidelines.

Doguwa further urged Governor Yusuf to respect the collective position of the party stakeholders, while emphasising that the final constitutional authority rests with the governor.

He expressed optimism that the proposed nomination would strengthen political collaboration and improve the APC’s prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
